NEW Summer Sermon Series

Christ Fellowship Northwest, by God’s grace, has received the good news of the gospel with all its doctrine. God has taught us through the means of His Word, His Spirit, and His human messengers; therefore, we possess the privilege and responsibility to know, holdfast, and faithfully pass it on to others.

2 CORINTHIANS 4:1-2

Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.  But we have renounced disgraceful, and underhanded ways.  We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

God equips the church for such a responsibility through a variety of means.  Two primary means include:

  1. The Gifts of Pastors and Teacher (Ep. 4:11-14)

God does not leave His people without direction.  In order that they might not be “tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine” he gifts each congregation with men enabled by Him to teach and preach.  They come to the church as grace gifts tasked with communicating sound doctrine for the good of the members.

  1. The Doctrinal Confessions and Formulation of Previous Generations

Thankfully, past generations have carefully crafted public statements setting forth the gospel’s doctrine in clarity and precision.  These confessions do not stand over Scripture with a superior authority.  Rather, they give witness to the teachings of the Scriptures as handed down from one generation to the next.  As with any human document, creeds and confessions may contain error; therefore, they must be subjected to the rule of the Bible.  At the same time, the endurance of many creeds and confessions throughout the history of the church testifies to their faithfulness in preserving the true gospel.

At CFNW, our work to faithfully pass on the doctrine we have received is served by a few documents.

  1. CFNW Statement of Faith

  2. The Baptist Faith and Message 2000

  3. TheAbstract of Principles

This sermon series aims to clearly set before the church the central doctrines held by CFNW as handed to them by God through His word, His spirit, and His teachers & preachers.

Considerations

As we set out to do so, a few considerations must be made:

  1. Our Selection of Doctrines

We have selected some of the doctrines and not others for this sermon series.  Two factors were considered in this selection.

First, we chose not to included doctrines that have been the center of recent sermons.  For example, we will not discuss the doctrine of the Last Things, since it was a major theme in the sermon series, “Endure to the End,” nor will we look at the doctrine of the church since it is the central theme of our most recent sermon series, “a Church.”

Second, we have chosen to prioritize those doctrines most directly connected to the gospel.  These include the doctrines of Scripture, God, Man, and Salvation.

  1. Our Method

Rather than structuring the sermons series by mirroring the structure of the Statement of Faith, we have chosen the following structure:

  • June 1 | Scripture

  • June 8 | God: One God

  • June 15 | God the Father

  • June 22 | God the Son

  • June 29 | God the Holy Spirit

  • July 6 | Man: Made in the Image God

  • July 13 | Man: Made Male and Female

  • July 20 | Salvation: Sin and Death

  • July 27 | Salvation: New Life

  • August 3 | Salvation: Future Glory

  1. Our Commitment to Expositional Preaching

Normally, we preach straight through books of the Bible.  We believe strongly that this is the best practice for teaching the Bible to the church.  However, on occasion it serves the church to deal with subjects and topics.  In this series we will not be preaching straight through a book; rather, a text that clearly sets before us the selected doctrine will be used.  These texts will as always be explained and preached in a manner faithful to the meaning and point of the text.

As we look together at what the Scriptures teach concerning these fundamental doctrines of the faith we have received, we pray that God will equip us and strengthen us.
