Why Do We Need to Be Born Again? by Pastor John Piper
The resurrection of Jesus did not only secure the resurrection of our physical bodies after death but it also secure our spiritual resurrection from death to life, from darkness to light.
"When we were dead in our trespasses," Paul wrote, "[God] made us alive together with Christ" (Eph. 2:5). This spiritual resurrection occurs in this life and continues into eternity, even when our physical bodies perish in death.
We call this spiritual resurrection spoken of by Paul, "regeneration" or the "new birth." The Baptist Faith and Message 2000 defines regeneration in this way:
“Regeneration, or the new birth, is a work of God’s grace whereby believers become new creatures in Christ Jesus. It is a change of heart wrought by the Holy Spirit through conviction of sin, to which the sinner responds in repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Repentance and faith are inseparable experiences of grace. - Baptist Faith and Message 2000, IV. Salvation. A.
Those brought to life by the work of God's Spirit (regeneration) are new creations. This work of the Spirit is the starting point of a new life in Christ delivered from death and sin.
